Lake Qarun Protectorate is one of Egypt’s most important nature reserves, renowned for its outstanding natural and cultural heritage.

It stands out globally for hosting some of the world’s most significant vertebrate fossil sites. In addition to its breathtaking landscapes, the area tells the story of Earth’s history across multiple geological eras — preserving traces of life that span over 25 million years.

Lake Qaroun

One of the oldest natural lakes in the world, Lake Qaroun covers an area of approximately 235 km².

It is a saltwater lake, home to two islands: Golden Horn Island and Hammoud Island.

While its fish resources are limited, the lake is known for its high salinity and its rich birdlife.
It hosts a large number of resident birds, and welcomes thousands of migratory birds every year, making it a vital stopover along major migration routes
